Is it Time to Have Your Dryer Vent Cleaned?

Wet clothing is a telltale sign that it may be time again to have your dryer vent inspected. While many of us do our best to wipe loose lint from the dryer filter after each use, highly flammable lint can accumulate in the dryer vents leading to dangerous and sometimes life-threatening fires.

In a report of clothes dryer fires in residential buildings from 2008-2010 the United States Fire Administration found that about 2,900 fires a year are caused by dryers and about 34% of those stem from failure to clean the dryer vent.

In general dryer vents should be inspected/ cleaned at least once a year. In addition, gas-powered dryers should be regularly inspected to ensure the gas line is leak free and properly connected.

Especially in large households and businesses like laundromats and dry-cleaning services that frequently use the dryer, regular inspection will help keep your appliance running smoothly and efficiently while also preventing any significant disasters from occurring.

Besides wet clothing, another sign of poor ventilation is the temperature of the dryer’s control area. If you find that the panel is warmer than usual, immediately disconnect your dryer and inspect your vent. Animal nests are another common cause of obstruction. Outside vent openings that are at or just above ground level are perfect locations for rodent nests such as squirrels and chipmunks while birds prefer to nest in more upper level vents.

Five Signs You're Overdue for Dryer Vent Cleaning

     1. Your Dryer Feels Hotter Than Usual. After consistent build up of lint in dryer vents, the airflow can become restricted and cause overheating in your dryer, this can ultimately lead to a dryer fire.

    2. There is visible lint overflowing from the vent opening outside and behind the dryer. Lint that escapes the dryer filter eventually makes its way through the dryer ducts where it becomes trapped.

If rodents or birds have built nests in your vent opening this can also trap lint from escaping through your vent opening.

    3. You’ve noticed your electricity bill is higher than usual. Dryers with clogged vents will leave clothes damp requiring you to run multiple cycles to dry a single load. Additionally, dryers that use sensors to discern the clothes dampness will require longer run times to ultimately dry your clothes.

Both of these conditions will lead to increases in your spending, as it is estimated that a dryer is responsible for an astounding 6% of homeowners’ electricity bills.

    4. Your clothes are still damp after a dry cycle. Dryers with poor ventilation can results in condensation collecting in the dryer’s ducts ultimately draining back into the dryer after it has been turned off.

    5. It’s been over a year since you last had your dryer vent cleaned. For proper running and efficiency, the United States Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Agency both suggest that dryer vents should be cleaned at least once a year.
